Maia Luxury Resort & Spa Seychelles with Smith Hotels (Check Availability)

Offering all the peace and privacy of a monastic cell, but thankfully none of its spartan nature, Maia Luxury Resort & Spa, overlooking Anse Louis beach on the southwest coast of Mahé in the Seychelles, is where thatched roofs sit like dots of corn-yellow in a palette of greens and blues. It’s the ideal place to drag your knotted back and furrowed brow for a spot of proper relaxation. All the Indian Ocean clichés – palms rippling in the warm breeze, white sand abutting turquoise waters – are made reality at this all-inclusive stay, and all you have to do is roll out your rattan sun mat in the midst of them.
Home to a kaleidoscope of corals and tropical fish, the waters surrounding the Maia peninsula are ideal for diving. If you’re new to it, Maia’s a great place to learn; there’s a handful of dive centres nearby – your butler can arrange it all. If you prefer to stick closer to the surface, peaceful Anse Louis bay is ideal for snorkelling. Feeling like a fish supper? Ask your butler to organise a deep-sea fishing trip for tuna, marlin, swordsfish or other oceangoing game, and bring back your catch for your personal chef to prepare for you in your villa or on the beach. In the north of Mahé, Beau Vallon bay is your first port of call for windsurfing, waterskiing, parasailing and other sea-bound thrills. On land, explore the local landscape by horse or on foot, trekking through forests to waterfalls, up mountains and across beaches. Or, for an insight into Seychellois life, visit one of Mahé’s vibrant markets in the centre of town. Back at the hotel, Maia Resort’s spa has an huge range of luxurious treatments; try the ‘twenty dancing fingers’ massage or banana leaf wrap to the soporific sound of waterfalls and birdsong. The spa also runs free alfresco group classes in Hatha yoga and Qi Gong (private sessions can be arranged).Your butler can also organise tours of the other islands by boat or helicopter.

Six Senses Zil Pasyon Seychelles with Smith Hotels (Check Availability)

All-villa beachside stay Six Senses Zil Pasyon sits on lesser-known private-island Félicité in the Seychelles. Its name rings true: a gasp-inspiring setting of white-sand beaches, soaring rocky outcrops and swaying palm trees does indeed bring on feelings of intense happiness. This boutique stay has an ocean-front pool, an eco-conscious ethic and a handful of eateries who plunder the sea for the freshest seafood. Dip into your private pool, snorkel in the island’s crystal-clear waters, and have your shoulder knots worked loose in the beach-side Six Senses Spa. In the evening, sip from a jar of house-made rum and watch as the sun melts into colours everywhere along the horizon. Like what you see?
If soaking up the sun by the crystal-clear waters that surround Six Senses Zil Pasyon isn’t quite enough, on-island activities include snorkelling, hiking, kayaking, cooking classes, outdoor cinema nights, petanque and croquet. You can also hop on a boat to explore one of the neighbouring islands of La Digue, Praslin, Aride, or the Curieuse Sister Islands; each one is no more than 30 minutes away. Aride is best for bird lovers, there’s a coastal cycle tour on La Digue Island, and Praslin Island’s big draw is white-sand Anse Lazio Beach.

Fregate Island Private Seychelles with Smith Hotels (Check Availability)

A mere four degrees south of the equator, this tiny lump of granite seemingly floating in the Indian Ocean is a sensitively developed, verdant paradise, the likes of which you imagine when the theme tune to Desert Island Discs drifts from your radio speakers. Traditional-style villas made from native mahogany and topped with thatched roofs provide your base, while talcum-soft sand will fast become your foot exfoliator of choice. The whole island is taken up by Fregate Island Private, so absolutely everything is taken care of – all you have to do is turn up and flop out.

Fregate has seven beaches to choose from – all with conveniently placed coolers stocked with refreshments – so you can happily while away days basking on the sands. If you prefer a more active approach to island life, take to the sea solo by sailboat, kayak or surfboard, or arrange waterskiing, windsurfing or Hobie Cat sailing. The island has its own yacht club and and a PADI dive centre offering certified scuba courses, day and night dives and deep-sea fishing expeditions with either its own crew or a bevy of local fisherman. On land, you can take advantage of the resident conservationists to gen up on the hundreds of exotic bird species that make Fregate their home, or get involved in a spot of ecological fieldwork, spotting hawksbill turtle hatchings as they emerge from the sand and scoot down to the sea. Explore the nearby mountain trails by bike or on foot (the trek up Mont Segnal is particularly exhilerating) or, to venture even further afield, ask your butler to arrange a powerboat or helicopter trip to another island for the day. If you’re of a more romantic mien, arrange an afternoon’s high tea at the island’s highest point, or take advantage of a couple’s treatment at the Rock Spa – if you’ve always wanted to be coated head to toe in Belgian chocolate, this is your chance…
