• Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): 2 nights
Depart from the UK on your overnight flight to Ho Chi Minh City.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. You could explore the city or book a day room to catch up on your sleep. This evening you can get to know your group and tour leader during a welcome dinner.
Begin your exploration with a half-day city tour that takes in the Central Post Office which was designed by renowned French architect, Gustave Eiffel. Admire grand colonial buildings as you stroll along Dong Khoi Street (formerly Rue Catinat) which featured in Graham Greene's novel, The Quiet American. Continue heading towards the Saigon River to see the elegant Saigon Opera House and the Reunification Palace. Discover the country’s turbulent past at the poignant War Remnants Museum and enjoy a free afternoon or take an optional tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a remarkable network of tunnels that provided a home to fighters and families during the Vietnam War.

• Can Tho (Mekong Delta): 1 night
Drive to Cai Be in the heart of the Mekong Delta for one of the highlights of the tour – a cruise on the mighty Mekong River and the chance to witness life on and around the water. Board the Cai Be Princess, a traditional wooden sampan boat, and begin your leisurely cruise along the busy waterways. Visit a 19th-Century house and make stops along the way to gain an insight into local cottage industries, such as coconut candy and puffed rice – the local equivalent of popcorn.

Stop for lunch at the charming Le Longanier Restaurant, a beautiful colonial-style villa set in a tropical riverside garden. Reboard the Cai Be Princess and cruise towards Vinh Long, via the Dong Phu Canal, before arriving at Binh Hoa Phuoc and An Binh – small islands renowned for their fruit orchards. Disembark at Vinh Long Pier and continue your journey by car to Can Tho.

• Hoi An: 2 nights
Rise early for a visit to Cai Rang floating market, one of the largest and most famous floating markets in the Mekong Delta. This is a great opportunity to get fantastic photos of colourful boats laden with fruit and vegetables. Return to your hotel for breakfast and then transfer to Ho Chi Minh airport for your flight to Danang (approx. 3½ hours). Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in the pretty UNESCO-listed city of Hoi An (approx. 40 minutes).
Explore Hoi An during a walking tour with visits to the 17th-Century Chua Ong Pagoda – a colourful Chinese-inspired structure, the ornate Fujian Assembly Hall and the Jinshang Temple which is dedicated to the goddess of the sea. Pass the Old House of Tan Ky, which was the home of an 18th-Century merchant, and cross the iconic 400 year-old Japanese Covered Bridge. End your afternoon with a relaxing boat trip along Thu Bon river. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

• Hué: 1 night
Enjoy the stunning scenery on your journey north to the former imperial capital of Hué, via the scenic Hai Van Pass, known as the ‘Pass of the Ocean Clouds'. Weather permitting, the views of the coast, mountains and local villages are truly spectacular. On arrival in Hué, explore the Royal Tomb of King Minh Mang which has a peaceful lakeside setting and is made up of palaces, temples and pavilions. Visit the hilltop Thien Mu Pagoda and board a dragon boat for a cruise on the Perfume River.
Discover more of the city's treasures this afternoon with a visit to the magnificent UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel – a vast complex of ornate temples, gates and bastions that was home to the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. Seek out some bargains at Dong Ba Market before transferring to your hotel. Approx. journey time: 2 hours.

• Hanoi: 1 night
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Hanoi (approx. 1¼ hours). This afternoon, explore the Old Quarter and the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural – the world's longest ceramic mosaic mural – during a walking tour. Visit a traditional coffee shop to enjoy a taste of Vietnamese egg coffee, a sweet after-dinner drink made with egg yolk and condensed milk.

• Halong Bay: 1 night
Today is one of the tour’s highlights – a cruise in beautiful Halong Bay.  Today is one of the tour’s highlights – a cruise in beautiful Halong Bay. Drive to Halong City (approx. 3½-4 hours) to board a junk and enjoy lunch onboard whilst gliding past limestone peaks and islands. This afternoon, explore Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave, and go swimming or hiking on Titov Island. Return to the ship to join a cooking demo and fruit-carving demo as you cruise to Ho Dong Tien. Enjoy happy hour and a cooking demo before dinner. This evening there is an opportunity to try squid fishing on the deck.

• King Express Train: 1 night
Early risers can join a t'ai chi exercise on the deck (6.30am) as the sun rises over the bay. After breakfast, continue cruising the bay and visit Dark and Light Cave by traditional bamboo boat or kayak (subject to availability). Reboard the ship and enjoy brunch as you make your way back to the harbour to disembark. Drive back to Hanoi (approx. 3½-4 hours) where you can enjoy use of a day room at a hotel (4-8pm) before transferring to the station to board your overnight train to Lào Cai (approx. 8½ hours).

• Sapa: 2 nights
Arrive in Lào Cai early and continue by road to the mountain town of Sapa (approx. 1 hour). Vietnam’s beautiful northern region is renowned for its stunning mountain scenery and distinct cultures. After breakfast at your hotel, drive to the Black H'mong village of Lào Chai, enjoying views of the mountains and rice terraces along the way. You are also likely to pass locals from a number of ethnic minority groups including H'mong, Zay and Red Dao. Walk around the village and soak up the local life before walking to Ta Van village to gain an insight into the life of the Zay hill tribe. After lunch in a local home, transfer back to Sapa town and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Follow a winding road downhill to the Black H'mong village of Cat Cat and observe the traditional homes and rural life here. This afternoon, drive to Ta Phin village which is home to the Black H'mong and colourful Red Dao hill minorities. Experience the differences between the two groups – that live without mixing with one another – by visiting local homes and interacting with the villagers.

• Hanoi: 1 night
This morning is at leisure before your full-day return journey by road to Hanoi (approx. 5-6 hours). This is a great opportunity to quiz your guide about local culture, or just sit back and relax.
Begin your exploration of the capital this morning with a visit to the marble mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh to learn about the man who led Vietnam's campaign for independence from French colonial rule. Wander the grounds to see the One Pillar Pagoda and the Presidential Palace. You will also visit the 11th-Century Temple of Literature which is dedicated to the Chinese scholar Confucius. Admire elegant French-colonial architecture during a cyclo ride through the narrow streets of the evocative Old Quarter which was once a thriving centre for craftsmen. Transfer to the airport for your overnight return flight to the UK, or you may choose to extend your holiday.
